The New Windows 11 Upgrade

Microsoft’s next generation of their Windows operating system has been released today (Tuesday 5th October). The new Windows 11 upgrade introduces a new and modernised User Interface as well as enhanced features and security under the hood. In this article we discuss various questions you might have. These could be how is the upgrade different, is it free and can you keep using Windows 10? We also mention the compatibility of devices and do you now need to purchase a new computer? All these questions you may have are explained below.

Windows 11 Testing & Availability

As an IT support company, we nearly always delay rolling out new operating systems until a few months after release. This ensures any teething problems are identified and resolved before making it available to our clients. Cambridge Support have been testing Windows 11 since it was made available as an Insider Preview build over the last few months. So far, we’ve not experienced any compatibility issues but now it is released, we will continue testing. We do this so that our clients receive the best and thorough service possible.

At Cambridge Support we playthings safe. We will continue testing once the final release is available for a period of 3 months. During these 3 months, we will continue to test commonly used applications to ensure that they will continue working in Windows 11.

How Is Windows 11 Different?

The new Windows 11 upgrade introduces a new core user interface and hardened security by default. Although familiar, there are noticeable differences in the experience which may raise questions amongst users. The taskbar shortcuts are now centered and the start menu has been simplified, but it retains its familiarity. Users may need a short time to adjust to the new experience, which is normal with any update. If you feel your company needs help with Windows 11 please contact us today and we’d love to help.

Is The Windows 11 Upgrade Free?

Windows 11 will be made available as a free upgrade from the 5th October 2021. Microsoft made Windows 10 available as a free upgrade in July 2015, and officially ended the upgrade scheme after 12 months. Therefore, we expect that a similar 12-month upgrade window will apply to Windows 11 as well. Microsoft hasn’t made a formal announcement of an end date at the time of writing. As soon as we know we will issue an update on our LinkedIn page. Follow us for friendly, IT expert advice.

Are My Devices Compatible?

The new Windows 11 upgrade introduces a new baseline hardware requirement to improve security out of the box. Many Windows 10 devices built in the last 5 years will meet this requirement however, there may be many machines which do not. Cambridge Support can help to identify which endpoints in your estate are compatible. We can then help drive the adoption of Windows 11 within your business.

We will highlight any devices that aren’t compatible and can assist with long-term plans. This is by identifying the expected service life of a device and ensuring that any future replacement will be compliant.

What If I Need To Purchase A New Computer?

Most new devices will now be offered with Windows 11, so there is no need to worry. During previous Windows releases, there is typically a transitional period. This is when devices are available either with the new version of Windows with the option of a downgrade, or vice versa. If you need to purchase new equipment for your company, our IT support team would be willing to help you. They will be able to assist as to whether you should remain on Windows 10 for now or adopt Windows 11 along with a new device.

Can I Keep Using Windows 10?

Microsoft will continue to support Windows 10 until October 2025. You can use Windows 10 for the next 4 years with the knowledge that you will continue to receive critical patches and security updates during that time. It is important to note that you should plan to upgrade to Windows 11 by October 2025 at the very latest to ensure that you continue running a supported version of Windows.
